Siku Zote
Pepita founded Siku Zote, delivering poetry workshops for young girls in Tanzanian orphanages. The workshops create a space for participants to express their experiences of their menstrual cycles through poetry, build understanding of menstrual health, and break stigma of menstruation. This initiative will integrate the Menstrual Health Project’s educational toolkits translated into Swahili to increase menstrual health awareness.
I founded Siku Zote to deliver poetry workshops for young girls in Tanzanian orphanages. The workshops create a space for participants to express what they're going through with their menstrual cycles through poetry, build understanding of menstrual health, and break the stigma around menstruation.
Our inaugural workshop was held in 2025 with Malaika Kids Orphanage in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. I sat with the young girls and opened up a space for us to talk about their experiences with menstruation. We then used poetry as a tool to express these feelings, with each participant writing a stanza that I later consolidated and edited into a finished piece.
