I founded Siku Zote to deliver poetry workshops for young girls in Tanzanian orphanages. The workshops create a space for participants to express what they're going through with their menstrual cycles through poetry, build understanding of menstrual health, and break the stigma around menstruation.

Our inaugural workshop was held in 2025 with Malaika Kids Orphanage in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. I sat with the young girls and opened up a space for us to talk about their experiences with menstruation. We then used poetry as a tool to express these feelings, with each participant writing a stanza that I later consolidated and edited into a finished piece.

My poem got turned into a song!

‘The Time is Now’ was adapted into a choral song by Ghanaian-Nigerian songwriter Efua Agyare-Kumi and composed/conducted by Scottish composer Fraser David Macdonald. This poem was originally written and performed by me for the 2023 SDG Summit Curtain Raiser event.

The Shasha Choral Project is a cross-cultural creative initiative by the [Shasha Network] - a Scotland-based youth empowerment organisation. The Shasha Choral Project translates raw human storytelling into a powerful, unified vocal performance. This musical collision is an invitation to urgency and showing up in the world as our truest selves. Our ideas, dreams and imaginations are boundless and have the potential to bring positive change in the world, especially when we co-create, co-imagine, and work as a collective.

The song was performed by young choral professionals based in Scotland.
